"Dawn" - Pride and Prejudice
I admit, I do like my chick-flicks now and then. It feeds my heart in a way that an action-packed, war-gore, horror movies can't. Below are a few of the lines that gets me all giggly, and YES, they're from Twilight, A Walk to Remember and Pride and Prejudice:
Edward Cullen: My family, we're different from others of our kind. We only drink animal blood, but it's your scent. It's like a drug to me. It's like you're my own personal brand of heroin. Isabella Swan: Why did you hate me so much when we met?
Edward Cullen: I did, only because of wanting you so badly. I still don't know if I can control myself.
Isabella Swan: I know you can.
Edward Cullen: I did, only because of wanting you so badly. I still don't know if I can control myself.
Isabella Swan: I know you can.
Jamie: You don't know the first thing about being someone's friend.
Landon: I don't want to just be your friend.
Jamie: You don't know what you want.
Landon: Neither do you. Maybe you're just too scared that someone might actually want to be with you.
Jamie: And why would that scare me?
Landon: Because then you wouldn't be able to hide behind your books, or your frickin' telescope, or your faith. No, no, you know the real reason why you're scared? It's cause you wanna be with me too..
Jamie: You don't know what you want.
Landon: Neither do you. Maybe you're just too scared that someone might actually want to be with you.
Jamie: And why would that scare me?
Landon: Because then you wouldn't be able to hide behind your books, or your frickin' telescope, or your faith. No, no, you know the real reason why you're scared? It's cause you wanna be with me too..
Elizabeth Bennet: Very well, although I wish you would not call me "my dear."
Mr. Darcy: [chuckles] Why?
Elizabeth Bennet: Because it's what my father always calls my mother when he's cross about something.
Mr. Darcy: What endearments am I allowed?
Elizabeth Bennet: Well let me think, "Lizzie" for every day, "My Pearl" for Sundays, and "Goddess Divine" but only on *very* special occasions.
Mr. Darcy: And... what should I call you when I am cross? Mrs. Darcy...?
Elizabeth Bennet: No! No. You may only call me "Mrs. Darcy"... when you are completely, and perfectly, and incandescently happy.
Mr. Darcy: [he snickers] Then how are you this evening... Mrs. Darcy?
Just reading these make my heart melt... :)
As repetitive and simple the plots are, we can't get bored of a good chick-flick. They invoke that emotional-high: a head-over-heels, squealing, cloud nine, nothing-in-the-world-can-make-me-unhappy feeling. And for me, I particularly gravitate to story lines where the prince relentlessly pursues the not-so-special girl, but in his eyes, she is his princess. Like in Twilight, Edward Cullen, described to be absolutely breathtaking, runs after simpleton Bella. Or in A Walk to Remember, (bad-boy turned good-boy) Landon's persistence stole the heart of the dying and Bible-hugging Jamie. And in P&P, mysterious, wealthy and dashing Mr. Darcy captures an oblivious, country-girl's heart.
But why does it tickle my heart? I believe that God created us in this way to give us the glimpse of the His love towards His people. Here we are: self-absorbed, unloving, not-so-special bunch of people. We neglect His presence and His authority; we are oblivious to how faithful he has been; and we prostitute our hearts to all things but Him. And yet, God still remembers us. He reminds us time and time again that by His grace and love, He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die and rescue us. He laid down His life for us. That's a love story.
But it doesn't stop there. Christ's death and resurrection was the ultimate act of love, but God knows how forgetful we are. We forget that we are being constantly pursued by Him; we forget that He wants our full affections; we forget that we are His bride. Like a love poem, He gave us His Word that whispers to us His love and compassion:

"This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sin" (I John 4: 10)
"... grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge -- that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God" (Ephesians 3:18b-19)
"I am my lover's and my lover is mine" (Song of Songs 6:3)
May I not abandon my first love, Jesus Christ. I want my heart to be fully saturated and satisfied in Him. Renew in me the joy of salvation.
