I thought I should let you all know how I got this amazing opportunity. In the beginning of the year, I was thinking how great it would be for me to go on a mission trip this summer. So I prayed and prayed for God and last February, I received an email about an opportunity to go to Rwanda. So I went to the chapel service and two missionaries Mr. and Mrs. Pahlow, who created an organization called Global Family Rescue, was going to take 4 students to Rwanda with them. I applied and God answered my prayers were answered. I was going to go to Rwanda and even better, I had also received a grant that would subsidized much of the cost.
Then, even more amazing, Desiree Guzman, who is the coordinator of this mission trip, said there was extra money. Rebecca Thalla, my dear friend, was accepted also! Somehow, God knew that I needed a friend.
A couple of weeks went by and then suddenly, we were given shocking news that GFR was no longer allowed to operate in Rwanda anymore. The Rwandan government thought that GFR was too politically involved, but that was not true. However, GFR had to comply to the Rwandan government's demands, and thus, cancel all mission trips in Rwanda for the summer. I was sad, angry, and confused. I could not understand why a government would stop assistance to their own people, but I forgot that I simply cannot understand everything.
But God did not let me down. He had a bigger plan and it turned out that from our original flight plan, we would stop in Nairobi, Kenya. Now, we will be working with Shalom House Kenya to do a variety of volunteer work including working with children in the orphanages and major slums of Kenya.
Many people ask me if I'm scared or nervous. At first, honestly, I was. I am going to a country that is far from home and different from my suburban life. But I know that God is in charge and that is my comfort. One thing I ask of you is to please pray for the entire team (all 10 of us) as we prepare for this trip and prepare our hearts. Thank you!
God’s love for us removes all fear.
We can resolve our fears by focusing on His immeasurable love for us.
